Meet the candidates

Following the untimely death of Cornwall Councillor Ray Tovey, Cornwall Council will be holding a by-election to fill the vacancy for the Gwinear-Gwithian and St Erth Electoral Division. Polling day will be Thursday 6 December, 2012.

Before that, however, the Parish Councils of Gwinear-Gwithian and St Erth have got together to arrange a public meeting which they are calling “Meet the Candidates”.

The Chairman of St Erth Parish Council, Councillor Ted Taylor, said that “One of the main reasons that the turnout was so poor in the recent Police Commissioner elections was that voters knew little or nothing about the candidates and what they stood for. St Erth and Gwinear-Gwithian Parish Councils don’t want that to happen for the election of the Cornwall Councillor for their area and so all the candidates have been invited to attend a meeting to tell people why they believe they should be elected and then everyone will have the opportunity to ask the candidates questions to find out more about them”. He added that “We hope that after the meeting, voters will be able to make an informed decision about who they believe will represent them best”.

The Chairman of Gwinear-Gwithian Parish Council, Councillor Brian Pocock, said that “Ray was a first class – and much respected – Elected Member for our 2 Parishes, so we are looking for a candidate that can promote – and deliver- what both Parish Councils and their electors want and need. We are looking for someone who understands the needs of our communities and has the skills to formulate imaginative answers that are “win-win” for both Cornwall Council and the Parishes of St Erth and Gwinear-Gwithian”

The meeting is due to be held on Tuesday 27th November at the Hall for Gwinear commencing 7pm and is open to all.
